NEW KNOWLEDGE IN NEURO-OPHTHALMOLOGY
Click here to read the AAO/NANOS Joint statement about this study
In this carefully conducted analysis, the Harvard neuro-ophthalmology team and collaborators found an increased risk of NAION in obese or diabetic neuro-ophthalmology patients following first prescription for semaglutide compared to neuro-ophthalmology patients with first prescription for non GLP1 medications for diabetes or obesity. The retrospective study design and non-population based sample may contribute to selection bias and limit generalizability. This intriguing result should inspire more research in this area! NANOS member Hadas Stiebel-Kalish and co-author surveyed fellow Israeli neuro-ops with a 97% response rate (!) regarding management of suspected #NAION. They found most screened for #OSA, #HTN, and #DM, and 80% recommended low-dose aspirin therapy. Workups were heterogenous and they suggested guidelines may help direct more efficient/effective patient care. Read the full article here
